Heritage Trail | Pinery Provincial Park - Ontario

Several walking trails are available for exploring the Pinery Provincial Park (Ontario). The Heritage Trail is a relaxed stroll that will lead you to a viewing platform that overlooks the Old Ausable Channel after meandering through an exceptional example of upland Oak Savanna habitat. 

🍔🍎The platform over the Old Ausable Channel is a perfect place for a short rest or a picnic. 

The term "oak savanna" refers to a plant community with scattered "open-grown oaks" surrounded by grasses. In the early 60’s, many pine trees were planted in the park. The park seems to have been named after the trees that were planted but the main native ecosystem was an oak savanna.

During winter months, the trail is the perfect location for a quiet snowshoe stroll. Go and explore the park yourself!

Cedar Trail | Pinery Provincial Park - Ontario

Pinery Provincial Park is a provincial park located on the shore of Lake Huron (Ontario). The variety of habitats in Pinery make the park a unique place. It is a natural environment created to preserve the Oak Savanna and the beach dunes. You can choose one of the numerous hiking trails for explore the natural environment of this park. There is so much to do for everyone.

The Cedar Trail is a nice little leisurely hike. Nothing too difficult, with a nice little lookout over the Old Ausable Channel. The loop portion of the trail is wheelchair accessible. Along this trail you will discover one of North America's rarest habitats; the Oak Savanna

🌳🌲This term describes a plant community of widely spaced trees with open crowns that allow much sunlight to reach the ground. This light supports a rich ground cover of prairie grasses, shrubs and flowers.

You may also extend your hike and follow the 850 m extension trail over several stairways to the Lake Huron shoreline. This 1 km trail will lead you directly to the Lake Huron after it crosses the road between dunes and Burley Campground. This extension section of trail is not handicap accessible.

👀🔭Quiet observers are often rewarded with memorable observations. Twenty-nine different species of reptiles and amphibians have been recorded for Pinery. Reptiles include seven species of turtles. You can observe turtles in the Old Ausable Channel.

Roundhouse Park | Toronto

The Roundhouse Park, at the south end of the CN Tower, is a park in Downtown Toronto. It features the John Street Roundhouse, a preserved locomotive roundhouse which is home to the Toronto Railway Museum

The John Street Roundhouse is a semi-circular structure built in 1929 and had 32 bays. Each of these was accessed by a set of tracks that linked up with the turntable. The Roundhouse turntable is 120 feet long, in order to accommodate the Canadian Pacific Railway's largest passenger steam locomotives. Locomotives were usually operated in one direction and the turntable was used to turn them around. It's one of the longest ever built in Canada and it was declared a National Historic Site in 1990.


The Roundhouse Park is also home to a collection of trains: four full-sized locomotives, three freight cars, two passenger cars and one diesel multiple unit. Exhibits include the original 60,000 gallon water tower, the 650 ton concrete locomotive coaling tower and a collection of historic buildings, including the Don Station and Cabin D.

​Gibbons Park | London (Ontario)

London has several natural spaces where you can go for stroll. Gibbons Park is one of these sites located in Central North of the city. The Thames Valley Parkway cross all the park so you can walk up or down the shoreline of the Thames river as far as you want. Walking trails are clean and easily accessed.

🌎The Thames Valley Parkway; otherwise known as the TVP, is the city’s primary multi-use pathway system.

Gibbons Park has three tennis courts and a warmed open air swimming pool. The place has many sitting areas which makes it the ideal spot to bring the family for a day of fun.

The Thames River is on one side and there are gorgeous old trees scattered throughout. Birdwatchers have been coming to Gibbons Park for years to observe great horned owls.

Dominguez Gap Wetlands | Long Beach, CA

Dominguez Gap Wetlands

The Dominguez Gap Wetlands is small restored wildlife habitat area adjacent to the Los Angeles River, in the city of Long Beach. These wetlands are completely man made by the Los Angeles County Flood Control District as a flood control zone for the Los Angeles river.

The Dominguez Gap is a great place for a walk or run. It offers a 2-mile round trip hike around the wetland zone. The loop can be hiked in either direction. The trail is well maintained and reasonably flat. One side is dirt and the other side is paved. There are a variety of native plants, seasonal birds, rabbits and tortoises.

Olvera Street | Los Angeles, CA

Olvera Street

Olvera Street is part of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, which includes many of the city’s oldest buildings. This street dates to 1930, when it was established to celebrate the city’s Mexican heritage. Today, Olvera Street is a pedestrian street full of shops and restaurants. There are 27 buildings of various ages, including the Avila Adobe, at 10 Olvera Street.

Los Angeles was founded in 1781 by Spanish settlers on a site southeast of today's Olvera Street near the Los Angeles River. 

The Avila Adobe is the oldest standing structure in the city. Originally built in 1818 by Francisco José Avila. Avila’s family lived in the house until 1868 when it was taken over by the North American army. The building is made of adobe brick, a material consisting of clay, water and other organic materials like straw. Today, the Avila Adobe’s interior depicts the California lifestyle of the 1840s.
